What is Reflexology?

Reflexology can mean different things to different people, but it is important not to think of it as simply a foot massage. Reflexology is a precise complementary therapy, not a beauty treatment, and it is not an alternative to conventional medicine. Instead, it works alongside any medical care you may already be receiving.

Reflexologists believe that the feet reflect the whole body, with every organ and gland represented in specific areas. By applying gentle, accurate pressure to these points, we aim to work indirectly with all parts of the body. The goal is to support the conditions in which your own natural healing system can function at its best.

Reflexology takes a holistic approach, meaning we consider the whole person—body, mind, and spirit. You may have heard the phrase “mind, body and spirit”; it reflects the idea that when one part of us is out of balance, the rest is affected. For example, if you are experiencing physical pain such as a migraine, your mind may feel foggy and your mood may be low. Reflexology can help reduce stress by encouraging deep relaxation, which in turn may be especially helpful for long‑term or recurring conditions.

Professional reflexologists believe that treatments should always be holistic to help maintain balance across these interconnected areas. As practitioners, we feel for imbalances in the reflex points of the feet. These subtle signs guide us to the areas that may need extra attention. By working with these reflexes, we aim to help the body return to a natural state of balance, supporting its own healing abilities. After your session, your reflexologist will advise you on a suitable treatment plan.

It is important to note that reflexologists do not diagnose medical conditions. This is strictly against our code of ethics. What we can do is help reduce stress and promote relaxation—factors believed to influence a large proportion of illnesses. In the hands of a well‑trained, professionally qualified practitioner, reflexology can be a powerful complementary therapy with people experience meaningful benefits from regular treatments.

Why try Reflexology?

Reflexology is deeply relaxing, and in today’s busy world, everyone can benefit from taking time to unwind. Many clients also find it particularly helpful for long‑standing or recurring issues they may have come to accept as “normal.”

Reflexologists often talk about “balancing” the body because our aim is to support harmony across the mind, body, and spirit. Most of us have times when we don’t feel quite ourselves—perhaps a bit “off colour” or struggling with a lingering issue. This is what we mean by being out of balance. Through training, we learn to feel these imbalances in the reflexes of the feet or hands and work to help restore equilibrium. This process supports the body’s own healing response.

What happens during a treatment?

Your first session begins with a confidential consultation, where we discuss your concerns and gather information to create a personalised treatment plan. It’s helpful to bring a list of any medications you are taking, including dosages.

You will then remove your footwear and relax on a comfortable couch. I will work on your feet—or hands, if appropriate—using gentle finger and thumb pressure to explore the reflex areas and identify any that may need extra care.

Most clients feel deeply relaxed during a session. Many report increased energy, improved focus, and a greater sense of wellbeing afterwards.

And the “worst” thing that might happen? You may simply enjoy one of the most relaxing hours you’ve had in a long time.
